This course is an introduction to observational drawing. No prior experience is required or expected. Using varied mark-making materials applied to flat surfaces, students will gain skills and confidence in the fundamental concepts and techniques of drawing. Skill acquisition is focused on observing and drawing from the natural world, manufactured objects, the human figure and other subjects. Students explore a variety of drawing approaches to drawing including realism, abstraction, conceptual and non-objective. Tools include graphite pencils, charcoal, pastels, inks, and mixed media. Students will have assigned readings and group discussions. What drives imaging in the 21st century is focused on throughout the semester.

• Learn the fundamental elements of 2-D image making.
• Learn composition within a given format.
• Build skills in basic mark-making in both wet and dry media.
• Grow in the patience necessary to create.
• Build and employ discipline specific art vocabulary.
• Develop a love and respect for drawing.
• Become familiar with a variety of tools and surfaces in making art.
