Description
Language is an important part of human social life - it plays a significant role in how we construct our identities, our relationships with others, and our societies. This course introduces students to some of the major concepts and topics in the study of language in society, including language and identity (particularly gender, ethnic, and national identities); the role of language in education, policy, law, and the workplace; and the relationships between language and multilingualism, globalization, and language loss; among others. Students will discuss and reflect critically on case studies from their own experience and from a wide range of international contexts.
Objectives
This course intends to: - introduce students to a range of topics and concepts in the study of language in society (e.g. variation, language change, standard language, language policy, etc.) - familiarize students with case studies from a range of international contexts - enable students to evaluate their own language use and views of social aspects of language and those of people and societies they encounter
