This is an advanced survey course on Kazakhstan’s foreign policymaking since 1991. Special emphasis will be given to the impact of the Soviet legacy on Kazakhstan’s foreign policy and the present relationships between Kazakhstan and the West. Other topics include Kazakhstan’s present role in the War on Terror and regional security.

Objectives
-
To introduce and trace the main concepts, approaches, directions and strategies of the formation and implementation of the foreign policy of Kazakhstan after independence;
To present the contemporary complexities and interdependence of political, geographic, cultural, security, economic aspects affecting the formation and transformation of the state’s position in the global arena;
To demonstrate the connection between the state’s role, place and development and the regional problems of modernity, especially in the context of Central Asian integration processes;
To inquire and point out the role of the component of the natural resource in Kazakhstan’s foreign policy;
To provide critical perspectives on modern processes, role and position of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the world community.

Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course students should be able to:
- identify the national interests in foreign policy formation and define the challenges to the national security of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
- analyze various geopolitical, economic, security, environmental factors significant to the decision making process of the foreign policy doctrine of the Republic of Kazakhstan;
- present an analytical view on regional problems affecting national and international interests of Kazakhstan within its neighborhood and globally;
- critically assess the interrelationship between the geopolitics of Kazakhstan and the interests of main global actors;
- critically evaluate of the positions of other states towards Kazakhstan.
