Credit Internship Program for MBA students (Entry Year: Fall 2005, 2006)

According to KIMEP Catalogue 2005-2007, MBA students are required to choose between:

1.      Internship

2.      Thesis/Business Research Project

Both are given 3 credits.

 1. Credit Internship Program (CIP) description

1.1 Registration to CIP

1) Fill in the resume on the BCB Career Services Center web site: www.kimep.kz/bcb/main/career. The resume will be then checked by the BCB Career Services Center. Students should provide BCB Career Services center with additional information (like preferences of time, place, field of work, etc.) in order to help search for internship opportunities.

4) Bring the Student Internship Registration Form to BCB Career Services Center

 1.2 Payment

After filling in the Student Internship Registration Form students have to pay for the course.  The cost of the Credit Internship Course (Thesis/Research Project) is the same as other 3-credit MBA courses.

 1.3 Internship Supervisors

The students will be assigned with an internship supervisor from BCB faculty. Internship supervisor will be appointed by the respective Department Chairs.  Student should also have one supervisor in the company.

 1.4 Required BCB CSC Trainings

Students must participate in a Preparatory Internship Training Session (PITS) prior to becoming an intern.  During such sessions practical advise and tips are given. Topics include, among others, “How To Write A Resume”, “How To Pass Through The Interview” and “Personal Grooming/Business etiquette”.  A student must choose at least three topics. 

2. How to Qualify for Participation in the MBA CIP

2.1 Eligibility

Students can take the credit internship course after completion of the 24 credit hours in the MBA program.

  Fast-Track MBA students are also allowed to take CIP after completion of 24 credit hours as other regular students, even though they transferred credits from Bachelor program.

Those students who are already employed may use this experience for internship, subject to approval by the faculty supervisor. The job experience must be of significance and relevant to the field of study. Such students must also fulfill the internship report requirement and bring necessary internship documents (letter from employer, recommendation from employer).  The other option is to take 3-credit of Business Research Project. 

3. Conditions of the CIP

3.1 Dates and Duration of the Internship

The period of internship is 160 hours (which is equal to 4 weeks of full time employment).  To keep track of internship hours, students will be required to fill in the time sheets from company. Time sheets are available in the BCB Career Services. Students are also allowed to work part time.

 3.2 Internship and Specialization Area

Internship and internship assignment should match the chosen specialization of a student.

 3.3 Other

Students can have internships in their native cities if they are able to find placement there. 

 4. Academic Component of the CIP

 4.1 Internship Report

1.      After completion of the internship, students will prepare the Internship report under the guidance of faculty Internship Supervisor.

2.      Internship report should be submitted to the Faculty Supervisor for evaluation within 15 days after completion of internship.

3.      It’s student’s responsibility to inform the faculty supervisor when required hours for internship is completed.

4.      After evaluation of the report, the Internship Supervisor will forward the grade and the report to BCB Career Services. Grades will be passed to the Registrar Office.

 Recommended size of the Internship Report  – 25 pages without appendixes, 1.5 space, 12 font, Times New Roman.

 4.2 Other internship documents

The students are required to bring several documents, besides Internship report:

  1. Internship confirmation letter.

  2. Recommendation/Evaluation letter from employer (the employer must certify that the intern’s conduct during the internship period has been satisfactory).

  • These 2 documents should be submitted to BCB Career Services Center in English. If your employer cannot provide you confirmation and recommendation letters in English, please take originals in Russian and attach English translation of these documents (it could be your own translation).

  1. Filled-in time sheet from employer

  2. Students are recommended to keep an internship journal that should be placed in the appendix of the Internship Report.

4.3 Grading

Faculty supervisor will grade the internship report according to KIMEP’s present grading system (see the Catalogue). This letter grade will constitute the Course grade. 

 5. BCB CSC Advising

Students can visit the BCB CSC and/or Internship faculty supervisor to get advice.

6. Rules of conduct

The students should follow the instructions and advice of supervisor and the employer during the internship. They are recommended to fulfill all the instructions of the employer during the internship. The students should undertake the offers and tasks given by the employer, even if it is not interesting or boring to the them. Students are encouraged to request for challenging tasks that may provide the students with valuable practical skills.
